    Learn More About Student Loans

Getting a loan is a big deal. So before you sign anything, take some time to learn more by reading the information below.
Of course, if you have more specific questions, you can always Ask a Citizen.

    • What do I need to apply?

To complete your application, you and your cosigner (if applicable) must have the following information:

      • Name, address, phone number, email address
      • Date of birth
      • Social Security Number
      • Recent pay stub (no more than 30 days old) or other proof of income and monthly housing payment
      • Employer name, phone number and length of employment (if applicable)
      • Name of school you plan to attend
      • Verification of enrollment at least half-time (typically 6-8 credit hours per semester; varies by school)
      • Cost of attendance and any financial aid received (see award letter from your school)
      • Student's anticipated graduation date, loan period and loan amount needed
      • Cosigner name and valid email address (if applicable)
    • I received my financial aid award letter, but still owe money to the school. Are there other loans available?
Yes, our Citizens Bank Student Loan®. In general, private loans allow you to borrow what you need to cover a gap after federal aid. These loans are credit based, so most students will require a creditworthy cosigner, such as a parent or legal guardian, to be approved.
    • What is multi-year approval?
Citizens Bank is committed to staying with you all the way through graduation. Multi-year approval provides an easy way to secure funding for additional years in school, without needing a hard credit inquiry for subsequent requests for funds in those later years. When you apply, you will be presented with the total amount you are eligible to borrow for all the years you are in school. If approved, you will be notified after you have submitted your application. This feature is available for both Citizens Bank Student Loan® and Citizens Bank Student Loan for Parents®. Please note: International students are not eligible for multi-year approval.
    • Can a private student loan help pay for my books and my personal expenses while I'm at school?
Yes. Our Citizens Bank Student Loan® can be used to help pay for your indirect costs while you are enrolled in school. The maximum you can borrow each year is determined by your individual school through loan certification.
    • Is there a loan my parents can take out for my education?
We offer the Citizens Bank Student Loan for Parents®, which enables parents to borrow a private student loan to help cover the cost of college without adding the burden of debt to the student. With no origination fee, this could be a better alternative to the Federal PLUS Loan for qualified applicants.
    • What type of documents could be required to verify my income?
Federal laws and regulations require us to request information from you prior to taking out a student loan or adding a cosigner. The information we request will vary depending on your circumstances but will include your name, DOB, address, social security or taxpayer identification number. We are also required to verify the information you provide to us. This verification process may require you to provide supporting documentation, including verification of income such as bank statements, paycheck stubs, W-2 forms, tax returns or divorce documents. What documents we require is based on the source(s) of income you include in your application.
